Re: Help us out: Forced Induction Scenarios

Scenario Description:
2009 (Sweden) - A well known Swedish truck and bus manufacturer has decided to reduce their tooling costs and outsource their engines. They have approached your company to develop a new range of gasoline engines that have diesel-like performance and characteristics. Although cost savings is important, the company is more concerned with reliability, economy, and emissions.

Technical Limitations:
Tech level: 2009
Redline greater than r
Emissions less than e
Minimum cylinder bore: 4 inches (101.6 mm)

Technical Specifications:
a) Torque greater than x (10%)

Scenario Description:
2001 (Japan) - The company you work for has narrowly escaped bankruptcy. The executives want to achieve economies of scale by offering a wide variety of vehicles, all powered by the *same* engine. The engine, they say, has to be small enough to fit in a family car, powerful enough to move heavier vehicles (SUVs, luxury cars), reliable enough to use in a pickup truck, responsive enough to use in a sports car, and smooth enough to use in a minivan/people carrier. Emissions and fuel economy are important, but are not the main focus of the design. Since there's only one engine to design, more money can be devoted to this project. While it does have plenty of cash, the executives want you to keep manufacturing costs "within reason".

Technical Limitations:
Size less than x, y, z
Emissions less than e
Smoothness greater than q
Premium unleaded - 95 RON

Technical Specifications:
a) Power greater than x (20%)
b) Lifespan greater than y (40%)
c) Responsiveness better than z (30%)
d) Cost less than c (5%)
e) Economy less than d (5%)

Scenario Description:
1993 (USA) - The "Gemini" is the best selling car in North America. A small group of car enthusiasts have been begging XYZ corp for more power and performance from their Geminis. The executives of the company feel they can make a business case for a "Super High Output" version of the Gemini if the existing V6 engine is used as a base. On the other hand, if you can build a motor (of any configuration) that is inexpensive and more powerful than the standard engine, the executives will go with your design.

Technical Limitations:
Size less than x, y, z
Emissions less than e
Smoothness greater than q
Premium unleaded - 95 RON

Technical Specifications:
a) Power greater than x (25%)
b) Lifespan greater than y (25%)
c) Responsiveness better than z (10%)
d) Cost less than c (40%)

Scenario Description:
1985 (USA) - Police departments around the country are looking to upgrade their engines. As faster, more powerful cars are being released to the public, the highway patrol vehicles are having a difficult time keeping up with traffic, let alone pursuing suspects. Your company has been asked to retrofit existing police cars with newer, more powerful engines. Cost and reliability are equally as important.

Technical Limitations:
Regular Unleaded - 91 RON
Catalytic Converter Required
Must use Fuel Injection

Technical Specifications:
a) Power greater than x (30%)
b) Lifespan greater than y (30%)
c) Maintenance costs less than z (10%)
d) Cost less than c (30%)

Re: Help us out: Forced Induction Scenarios

Scenario Description: Your company is willed to change the strategy from sporty image to an economical image. They want do build an economical luxury sedan. As the development should be fast, the managers decided to use an earlier engine as base, as it runs quite fine, but it's very thirsty and revvy.

Note: I tried it with a 2.7l-V8 (125kW @ 6300), which I modified to a 3.6l-V8 (125kW @ 5400). Economy got better from 275g/kWh down to 255g/kWh, while the MTTF rises from 650MRevs to 720MRevs. Just as example, there is no limitation in cylinders or aspiration.

Technical Limitations:

Tech Year: 1992
Size: under 3000cc
Ron: 95 - premium unleaded

Technical Specifications:
a) power more than 100kW (30%)
b) economy better than 260g/kWh(30%)
c) MTTF higher than 600MRevs (20%)
e) Cost less than w (20%)
