Re: Help us out: Forced Induction Scenarios

Scenario Description:
I'ts 1995 and you have been asked to design an engine for a powerboat, the guy in charge of the project just told you: "Hey, I don't know a s**t about engines... all I know is that I want a lot of power and forced induction is something that sounds cool."

Technical Limitations:
Closed air filter (we don't want to fill the engine with water, do we?)
Fuel : Ultimate Unleaded

Technical Specifications:
a)Power more than x (30%)
b)MTTF more than y (30%)
c)Weight less than z (20%)
d)Total cost less than q (20%)

Re: Help us out: Forced Induction Scenarios

Scenario Description:
It's 2008, in the middle of the worldwide economic crash, and your flagship luxury car needs a redesign ASAP. This once-legendary and respected sedan has become greatly outdated, and is now seen as nothing more than an 'old man-mobile'. You need to change the image of this car quick, or else your luxury brand will go bankrupt. This motor needs to be quiet, smooth, responsive, and powerful. Keep the costs down too!

Technical Limitations:
Tech level: 2006-2010
Premium Unleaded
Standard intake and cast headers (or whatever forced induction equivalent)
Emissions less than z

Technical Specifications:
a)Loudness less than x (10%)
b)Smoothness greater than y (25%)
c)Responsiveness z (20%)
d)Power greater than q (20%)
e)Cost less than w (25%)

Scenario Suggestion ID: 25

Scenario Description:
The full-size pickup market is growing increasingly competitive, with consumers demanding more and more towing capacity and reliability. Your company's aluminum block tech is not yet strong enough for heavy-duty applications, so try to keep the weight down in other areas. The ever-tightening federal regulations aren't helping either. Can you produce the necessary torque and longevity, while keeping the weight down enough to give the people what they want, while still meeting the emissions standards?

Technical Limitations:
Regular unleaded
Tech year 2013
Emissions less than c
Iron block
RPM limit must be above 5000 (or some other number, to prevent 'set rpm at 2000 and go for max torque and mttf')

Technical Specifications:
a)Torque greater than x (35%)
b)MTTF greater than y (30%)
c)Weight less than z (10%)
d)Economy less than q (25%)

Re: Help us out: Forced Induction Scenarios

Green Rocket
We have reached the point where nothing more can be researched. In Automation.. But it does not mean that we should stop working on cars. There's no AI that will develop an engine for us. It's still human field, and if we want to be more accurate, it's your field. The company you are working for wants to expand its green sportscar line. After a high-performance hot-hatch release, it's time to make a full-fledged sports coupe. The emmision norms are even stricter, the power is even more demanded, but there are also news that will make your job easier. The eccentric founder has just demised and his grandgrandson does not care about nature, which means that you can use forced induction.

Technical Limitations:
Tech Level: 2020
Size less or equal to x x y x z
Emmisions less than e
Super Premium Unleaded - 98

Technical Specifications:
a) Power better than p (30%)
b) Weight better than w (30%)
c) Lifespan better than l (15%)
d) Cost less than c (5%)
e) Responsiveness more than r (20%)

Re: Help us out: Forced Induction Scenarios

Millenium Crash
USA 2000 - The Year2k Bug erased a lot of your research files, and this is your smallest problem, because you've lost some very important data! Your company is in need of cheap, light and also powerful engine for the new sporty Rolv hatchback. You have to develop a new engine very fast, or a lot of customers have to wait and will get very angry!

Technical Limitations:
Tech Level: 1998-2002
Economy max z
Super Premium Unleaded - 95

Technical Specifications:
a) Power better than p (30%)
b) Weight lower than w (30%)
c) Cost less than c (20%)
d) Lifespan higher than r (20%)

Re: Help us out: Forced Induction Scenarios

I've watched recently this video
  Code:
http://www.f1archives.com/blog/archives/turbo1

And I think an scenario could be the one cosworth tried before going for a V6 specially designed for F1. That is taking an I4 engine and fitting a turbo.
Its the cheapest aproach to their problem and quite a good scenario for us I think.

Re: Help us out: Forced Induction Scenarios

The second chance
USA 1964 - After the failure of the turbocharged V8, your boss started to think logical and gave you a second chance. You have to make a new engine that can replace that unreliable and expensive V8, and it should be as powerful as the old one. You just started to think of a new engine, when your boss said, that this car will be very futuristic, and leaves you alone with that confusing sentence.

Technical Limitations:
Tech Level: 1962-1968

Technical Specifications:
a) Power better than p (30%)
b) Service Costs less than X (20%)
c) Cost less than c (20%)
d) Lifespan higher than r (30%)

Re: Help us out: Forced Induction Scenarios

I have a idea your company Has made public making a new race car for the le mans it has to last atleast longer then 5 races lets say 125 hours and this scenario also needs
a hp and torque minimum

Re: Help us out: Forced Induction Scenarios

Scenario Description:
It's 1970 (USA), and the horsepower wars are in full swing. "BIGGER IS BETTER" seems to be the mantra across the automotive landscape. A rival luxury car manufacturer just released a new model with a massive 500 cubic inch (8.2-liter) V8 engine. Not to be outdone, the marketing department of XYZ company feels the best way to counter this is with an even larger, more powerful engine. On the other hand, the executives have been keeping a closer eye on political and economic trends and feel that an engine that large will be obsolete very soon (and prohibitively expensive). Design an engine that keeps both marketing happy (so they feel they can actually sell the car) and the executives happy (so you can keep your job!).

Technical Limitations:
Tech level: 1970-1975
Unleaded Fuel Only
Must Have Catalytic Converter

Technical Specifications:
a)Loudness less than x (20%)
b)Smoothness greater than y (10%)
d)Power greater than q (40%)
e)Cost less than w (30%)

Scenario Suggestion ID: 30

Scenario Description:
It's 1989 (Japan), and the market is experiencing an unprecedented economic boom. People are demanding larger cars, and in particular, large 2-door luxury coupes. Your company sees a demand for this type of vehicle, but the existing range of engines (designed for subcompacts) are considered inadequate for the job. Within a relatively short time frame, you must design an engine that is quickly and easily produced, powerful, and relatively inexpensive.

Technical Limitations:
Premium Unleaded (95 RON)
Tech year 1987-1993
Must have DOHC cylinder heads
Emissions less than c

Technical Specifications:
a)Power greater than x (35%)
b)Man hours less than y (30%)
c)Cost less than z (25%)
d)Economy less than q (10%)

Scenario Description:
It's 2009 (Germany), and your flagship V8 has just earned the "Engine of the Year" award. Not a company to rest on its laurels, you've been assigned the difficult task of creating a replacement for this engine. It must be at least as powerful, more economical, have lower emissions, be more reliable, and still meet cost requirements.

Technical Limitations:
Premium Unleaded (98 RON)
Tech year 2005-2015
Emissions less than c
Must have all FORGED internals (the equivalent or better)

Technical Specifications:
a)Power greater than x (0%)
b)MTTF greater than y (35%)
c)Cost less than z (25%)
d)Economy less than q (40%)

Re: Help us out: Forced Induction Scenarios

iEngine
Yay! It's 2015, and the company known for releasing expensive gadgets no better than competition but marketed as cool wants to expand onto the automotive segment! They've already designed the iAudio, able to play music only from their software-based online digital media store. But they also need an engine. Actually, they need the iEngine. Actually, it is just going to be an crappy ecomotor, notable for running only on the fuel sold on their iFuel stations. But, it has to meet all those emmision norms, it needs to be cheap, so more money can be put on marketing, it needs to be light, small, economic, and also reliable, so it fits into the city car. And, it would be good if people didn't feel there's an engine powering the car. All of these vibrations need to be reduced, you need driver listening to iAudio while he relaxes, not frustrated by taxes or the rough engine.

Technical Limitations:
Tech Level: 2013-2017
Size less or equal to x x y x z
Emmisions less than e
Loudness less than l
Power more than p

Technical Specifications:
a) Weight better than w (20%)
b) Lifespan better than l (10%)
c) Cost less than c (20%)
d) Economy less than E (20%)
e) Smoothness more than l (30%)

Re: Help us out: Forced Induction Scenarios

Scenario Description:
It's 2013 (UK), and you work for a small, independent sports car manufacturer. The company has gone through several different owners over the past few months and the company is bleeding cash at an alarming rate. You've been asked to do the impossible: build a brand new engine to compete with the fastest sports cars on the market... on a shoestring budget.

Technical Limitations:
Ultra Unleaded (100 RON)
Tech year 2010-2016

Technical Specifications:
a)Power greater than x (35%)
b)MTTF greater than y (15%)
c)Cost less than z (50%)
d)Loudness between a and b (0%)

Scenario Suggestion ID: 34

____________________________________________

Scenario Description:
It's 2013 (China), and crude oil prices have tripled!!! The market for fuel efficient cars has gone through the roof and several new car companies have been created, all trying to cash in on the boom. One of them has asked you to "emulate" another manufacturer's technology -- designed to squeeze the most amount of power out of the least amount of fuel. The goal is to deliver reliable, hybrid-like fuel economy and the cleanest possible emissions for the lowest price. The cheaper you can make the engine, the bigger the year-end bonus for you and your engineering team!

Technical Limitations:
Tech Year 2008-2020
Minimum Compression Ratio: 13:1
Must Use Direct Injection
Loudness less than t
Weight less than w

Technical Specifications:
a)Power greater than x (0%)
b)MTTF greater than y (15%)
c)Cost less than z (25%)
d)Fuel economy less than r (45%)
e)Emissions less than s (15%)
