Scenario:
Cheap, Reliable, economical engine… Haven’t the Japanese been doing that for years?

The year is 2020, oil prices at an all-time high and becoming increasingly more difficult to obtain. Drastic measures are called upon: Located in the USA as a large Auto manufacturer the US Armed services have sent your company a top secret objective... Create a fuel economic engine with enough power to drive the front-lines against Saudi Arabia.
After burning through most of the global oil supply, Saudi Arabia remains one of the few countries with a substantial reserve. In recent years Saudi Arabia signed a contract with china, this guarantees China a constant supply of fuel and Saudi Arabia with protection. WE WANT THAT OIL MEN!!


Technical limitations:
Naturally aspirated
1.0L to 3.3L
210 ft lb of torque (284 Nm) or above
Must run on low quality unleaded fuel


Technical Specifications:
Total Cost lower than X (20%)
Economy better than Y (40%)
Reliability better than Z (20%)
Power better than A (20%)

(*Not sure about the Tech Specs)

I was wanting to think of a way to allow people access to all sorts of modern parts but give them an objective which would be "important".

Scenario:

It's the mid 1970's, the oil crisis is in full effect, brands are trying their best to make economical cars, unfortunately the American brands are falling a bit behind in this, mostly relying on huge engines and even huger cars.
An American brand has contacted you, wanting help changing up their Sports Sedan, the car has a 2.3 I4 with a carburetor, and they want you to build on that engine, make their 2.3 I4 as economical and still sporty as you can, running on the cheapest fuel you can manage.

Tech Limits:
You have to use the 2.3 I4 base.
It for some reason for a 2.3 I4, only comes with 75 HP, you have to improve on that, and still have it reliable, cheap and economic.
You are allowed to make changes to the way the fuel is delivered, as long as it is a cheap low RON fuel.
It needs to be competitive even on the European market.
It needs to be inexpensive to make.

Scenario:
In 1978 Crazy bastard engineer at Conan Coachwork contact you, They're making a Van size of a Midget with composite body. They're aiming for a small economical van which is good for commercial usage and also fun to drive. But now they got a problem because they can't be bothered to make their own 0.4 30hp very reliable engine. Can you make one that will make them very happy?

Naturally aspirated
0.6 Litre or less
Must run on Normal Unleaded

Technical Specifications:
Cost lower than $_$ (50%)
Economy better than x (30%)
Power better than H (15%)
Reliability better than Y (5%)

Scenario description:

It's the year 2000. Countries everywhere are passing sweeping legislation trying to regulate greenhouse gasses. The company you work for needs a new engine for their highest seller that can meet these new requirements in all the markets, while still trying to keeping true to their sporty heritage.


Technical limitations:
  • 2.5L max. capacity
  • Must use RON 91 or lower
  • All other period appropriate technologies allowed.

Technical specifications:

  • Emissions lower than v (30%)
  • Economy greater than w (30%)
  • Cost lower than x (15%)
  • Power greater than y (15%)
  • Responsiveness greater than z (10%)

seems i missed the part about the I4, doh!

well, the same brand did make that same car, with a 75hp I4, which is even worse than the 2.8 V6 :P
who wants a 4cyl Mustang? XD

the year is 1996 and the japanese need a fast and economic little car so they tell the engineers at your little company to make an engine that is fast reliable and economic this little engine is going to need to be fast and fun little car but economic for city driving.

Technical limitations:
Naturally aspirated,
1.6, Max 81 Bore and 81 Stroke
Fuel injection is allowed
Cast bottom end

Technical specifications:
a) Power more than x (50%)
b) Cost lower than z (20%)
c) MTTF higher than y (20%)
d) Responsiveness more than q (10%)

The year is 1951, a machinery and equipment manufacture approaches your engine firm to design and build a stationary engine for use in water pumps, electrical gen-sets and and air compressors. Can you build an engine that can power all these machines and propel your firm to the forefront of engine design and distribution?

Technical limitations:
4 Cylinders
Lightweight (Aluminium allowed)
3300cc - 4500cc.
1950s Tech only

Technical specifications:
Torque more than A (40%)
Weight lower than B (25%)
Price lower than C (15%)
MTTF higher than D (30%)

//Not quite possible - max I4 capacity possible in Automation is 3.14 l

Scenario description:
You have been tasked with developing a midsize engine for use in a military light truck. The truck, however will be using a large hydraulic crane and winch for use in vehicle recovery and repair. Can you fulfill the requirements for the contract?

Technical limitations:
Must use forced induction (Killrob: quote "Remember that it's limited to naturally aspirated Inline-4 engines currently!")
Peak torque must be below half the rpm limit
Fuel injection is allowed
No aluminium can be used on the engine

Technical specifications:
Power more than A (40%)
Peak torque occurs below B (20%)
Price lower than C (10%)
MTTF higher than D (30%)
