Re: Help us out: Engine Designer Demo - Scenarios

Scenario Description
The year is 1992 and You have been approached by an Italian automaker with a problem. They have been building a cheap compact car for the local market
for a few years now, and its very popular. The company belives that the car would be very popular in the former USSR, however the poor quality russian fuel
makes the car's engine fail! Can you retune their engine for the russian market, without increasing its cost?

Technical Limitations

Run on Poor Quality Unleaded
Can Only change Fuel Tuning, Ignition Tuning, Compression, Cam Profile and Cam Timing.
Manufacture Year 1992

Technical Specs

Cost of A (same price as old engine) (50%)
Power of B (maybe 10% less than old engine) (20%)
Economy of C (somewhat worse than old engine) (30%)

Re: Help us out: Engine Designer Demo - Scenarios

Scenario Description

The year is 1995, and a Japanese car manufacturer has contracted you to design an engine for their new hot hatch. They don't have enough money to design a new engine from
scratch, so they'd like you to use the block and bottom end components of their existing 1.6ltr economy engine. You'll need spice up its performance to make a sutibly sporty powerplant,
But you'll need to keep it reliable, keep costs in check and meet emissions regulations

Technical Limitations

Must use existing 1.6Ltr iron bottom end with cast internals(starts with SOHC 16v head and MPFI but can be changed)
Manufacture Year 1993 - 1996
Must run on premium fuel or worse.

Goals

Power of A (Probably around 100kw) (40%)
Responsivness of B (20%)
MTTF of C (Not much worse than original) (10%)
Emissions of D (Not much worse than original) (5%)
Cost of E (only somewhat more expensive than original) (25%)

Re: Help us out: Engine Designer Demo - Scenarios

Scenario description:

The year is 1992. Several manufacturers have already released very successful sports cars within the Japanese Kei-class, including the Suzasaki Latte and the Honga Thump. As the Chief of Engine Design for Matsuda, it is your job to come up with a power-plant to be introduced in your company's vehicle. Your competitors are both powered by 3-cylinder engines, one naturally aspirated and one turbocharged, and so the President has decided to utilise a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine to distinguish the brand. It must still comply with the Kei-class regulations, but you are given a free reign to use the most up-to-date technology available.

Technical limitations:
660cc max. capacity
Must use RON 95 or lower
Must have a maximum power equal or less than 47kW (63hp)
Must be naturally aspirated
All other period appropriate technologies allowed

Technical specifications:
Torque more than w (40%) : >60Nm? (Honda Beat)
Cost lower than x (30%)
Weight less than y (15%)
MTTF higher than z (15%)

I'd name this scenario : "In Soviet Russia, Petrol are s**t."
I love how Cossack Micrometre is made out of wood.

Re: Help us out: Engine Designer Demo - Scenarios

Scenario Description
You've been engaging in a bit of industrial espionage for a few hears now and have ended up as head designer of Super Evil Motors inc. Your mission, to construct the worst engine possible and bring them down. But the engine must not fail when it's tested, or your cover will be blown.

Although I don't know enough to know what specs to use for that one - all my engines fail...

Re: Help us out: Engine Designer Demo - Scenarios

That's actually a really interesting idea! Build an engine which has a non-zero MTTF which is as low as possible :) pretty nifty! Also, because you are evil, the emissions must be as high as possible at the same time, the loudness as high as possible, and it only takes the worst quality leaded fuel, of course. It would run on kittens, but they dropped out of the budget. :P

might I also add that this Super Evil Motors inc engine should run as roughly as possible and cost as much as possible.
